Which iPhones use OLED, and which use LCD

Whether your iPhone came with an OLED or an LCD decides which replacement screens are worth considering. It's easy to mix up — the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 11 Pro, for example, are different.

The list

  • LCD
    Models:
iPhone 6S, 7, 8 (and Plus versions), iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd gen)
  • OLED
    Models:
    iPhone X, XS, XS Max, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, and every iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 model
The trap: iPhone 11 is LCD, iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max are OLED. Same for XR (LCD) and XS (OLED).

If your iPhone is LCD

OLED replacement options don't apply. Your choice is between Original Grade and Premium TFT — both LCD-type panels. Because the original was already an LCD, the difference you'll see is smaller than on an OLED phone. On the iPhone 11 and XR, those two options are the ones our customers choose.

If your iPhone is OLED

You have the full range: Genuine, Original Grade, Premium OLED, Standard OLED and Premium TFT. Going from OLED to TFT costs less, but blacks look greyer and on some models the border is slightly thicker.

OLED screens also fail in their own way: a drop can leave the glass almost intact while a black or green blot spreads underneath. That always needs a full screen, never glass only.
