Face ID and True Tone after a screen replacement

Two worries come up in almost every screen conversation: will Face ID still work, and why do some people lose True Tone? The answers are different.

Face ID: not part of the screen

The Face ID camera system sits in the top of the phone, behind the notch or Dynamic Island. It's not built into the display you're replacing. A normal screen replacement leaves it where it is.

The care is in the opening. The screen and the Face ID parts are close together and connected by thin flex cables, so the phone has to be opened slowly and correctly. That's why we test Face ID with you at the counter before and after the job.

If Face ID already wasn't working before the screen broke, tell us. That's a separate fault and changing the screen won't bring it back.

True Tone: depends on the replacement

True Tone adjusts the screen's colour to the light around you. It relies on calibration information that belongs to the original screen. Depending on the replacement and the model, True Tone may not be available afterwards.

If True Tone matters to you, ask the technician before you choose a screen option. They'll tell you what to expect on your model.

The Settings message

On iPhone 11 and later, a screen that iOS can't verify as a genuine Apple part is listed as Unknown Part in Parts and Service History. It's a notice, not a fault. The Genuine option is the one that shows as genuine.

How we check before you leave

  • Touch across the whole screen.
  • Face ID or Touch ID.
  • Front camera and earpiece.
  • Brightness and the proximity sensor (screen goes dark during a call).

Tell us your model. We'll price every screen option.

Screen prices change with the model and the option, so they aren't on this site. One WhatsApp message gets you the exact figures, free and with no obligation.
