Cracked screen, but everything still works?

If only the top glass is broken and the picture and touch under it are perfect, you may not need a whole new screen. Here's how to tell — and when not to risk it.

Glass only can work if all of these are true

  • No black patches, coloured blots or lines anywhere on the picture.
  • Touch responds everywhere — including along the cracks and the edges.
  • No flicker when you change brightness.
  • Face ID works (on Face ID models).

Quick test: open Notes, then drag one finger slowly across every part of the screen, including right over the cracks. If the line follows your finger all the way, touch is fine.

Full screen replacement if any of these happen

  • A black patch that's spreading — the display layer underneath is damaged.
  • Green, white or rainbow lines.
  • “Ghost touch”: the phone types or taps by itself.
  • Parts of the screen that don't respond.

Why glass only isn't always cheaper in the end

Separating the glass from the display is careful machine work. If the display underneath has a hidden crack, it can fail during the separation — and then you need a full screen anyway. The technician checks for this first and tells you the risk before starting.

Glass-only replacement comes with a 30-day warranty against bubbles and the glass lifting. It doesn't cover the display underneath, because that's still your original part.
